Description:

Boldenone is an injectable veterinary steroid with strong anabolic and moderate androgenic properties. Boldenone greatly prolongs the drug's active life (undecylenate ester is one carbon atom longer than decanoate), and therefore, it requires only one injection every 3 or 4 weeks. Athletes favor this drug for its balanced anabolic and androgenic properties and often consider it a stronger, slightly more androgenic alternative to Deca-Durabolin. It is generally cheaper and can replace Deca in most cycles without greatly altering the end result. Boldenone is also generally regarded as an effective erythropoiesis-stimulating drug, although this is a feature of nearly all anabolic/androgenic steroids.

History:

Ciba reportedly branded it as a synthetic anabolic steroid compound in 1949. During the 1950s and 60s, the company developed several experimental esters of the drug, eventually releasing boldenone as a long-acting agent. It was sold under the brand name Parenabol and was known as an injectable anabolic agent due to its properties. Parenabol had some clinical applications in the late 1960s and early 70s, primarily as an anabolic agent in catabolic conditions and for preserving bone mass in osteoporosis. Boldenone had a brief presence in the human medical market; however, it was discontinued globally before the late 1970s. Squibb gained recognition in the veterinary market by introducing this agent and sold it under the now most famous trade name Boldenone.

In the veterinary market, boldenone is most commonly used for horses, though in many regions, it is also used on other animals. It typically has a noticeable impact on lean bodyweight, appetite, and general disposition of the animal. Boldenone brands were sold under the Squibb label until 1985 when Solvay acquired Squibb’s U.S. animal health business. Boldenone was sold under the Solvay label for several years until Pfizer finally acquired Solvay’s animal health division in 1995. The division was established as Fort Dodge Animal Health, which then continued to market boldenone in the USA and certain local markets. Many other generic and brand forms of boldenone now exist in various international drug markets because any patents regarding boldenone have long expired.

How It’s Supplied:

Boldenone is widely used in the veterinary market. Composition and dosage may vary by country and manufacturer; most products are supplied as multi-dose vials containing an oil solution; typically carrying 25mg/ml or 50mg/ml of steroid.

Structural Features:

Boldenone is a modified form of testosterone. It differs by the introduction of a double bond between carbons 1 and 2, which reduces its relative estrogenicity and androgenicity. It contains boldenone modified by the addition of a carboxylic acid ester (undecylenate) at the 17-beta hydroxyl group. Esterified steroids are less polar and absorb slower from the injection site. Once in the bloodstream, the ester is removed to yield free (active) boldenone. Esterified steroids are designed to prolong the therapeutic effect after administration, allowing less frequent injections compared to free (unesterified) steroids. Boldenone is designed to provide a peak release of boldenone within a few days after injection and maintain hormone release for approximately 21-28 days.

Interestingly, the structural makeup of boldenone and Dianabol (methandrostenolone) is almost identical. In this case, the compound uses a 17-beta ester (undecylenate) to facilitate administration, whereas methandrostenolone is administered orally due to the use of a 17-alpha alkyl. Beyond this, the molecules are the same. However, their effects on the body are distinctly different, demonstrating that 17-methylation affects more than just the oral efficacy of a steroid.

Side Effects (Estrogenic):

Boldenone is aromatized in the body to estradiol (estrogen). Elevated estrogen levels can lead to side effects such as increased water retention, body fat increase, and gynecomastia. Boldenone is considered a mildly estrogenic steroid. Aromatization studies suggest that its rate of conversion to estradiol is approximately half that of testosterone. The likelihood of Boldenone causing significant estrogenic side effects is slightly higher than that of nandrolone but much lower than that of testosterone. Estrogenic side effects are usually not pronounced unless this drug is taken in doses of 200-400 mg per week. Anti-estrogens such as clomiphene citrate or tamoxifen citrate can be used to mitigate these effects. Alternatively, aromatase inhibitors like anastrozole (Arimidex) can be used, but they are quite expensive and may negatively impact blood lipids.

Side Effects (Androgenic):

Although classified as an anabolic steroid, this substance still has androgenic side effects, particularly at higher doses. Side effects may include oily skin, acne, and the growth of body/facial hair. Anabolic/androgenic steroids might also exacerbate male pattern baldness. Women are also warned of the potential virilizing effects of anabolic/androgenic steroids. These can include deepening of the voice, menstrual irregularities, changes in skin texture, facial hair growth, and clitoral enlargement.

Note that although boldenone can be reduced to a more potent androgen (dihydroboldenone) via 5-alpha reductase in androgen-responsive target tissues like the skin, scalp, and prostate, its affinity for this enzyme in the human body is extremely low. Therefore, finasteride or dutasteride will not significantly affect the relative androgenicity of boldenone.

Side Effects (Hepatotoxicity):

Boldenone is not c-17 alpha-alkylated, and does not have hepatotoxic effects. Therefore, liver toxicity is unlikely.

Side Effects (Cardiovascular):

Anabolic/androgenic steroids can have deleterious effects on serum cholesterol. This includes a tendency to reduce HDL (good) cholesterol values and increase LDL (bad) cholesterol values, potentially shifting the HDL to LDL balance and leading to a greater risk of arteriosclerosis. The relative impact of anabolic/androgenic steroids on serum lipids depends on the dose, the route of administration (oral vs. injection), the type of steroid (aromatizable or non-aromatizable), and the level of resistance to hepatic metabolism. Anabolic/androgenic steroids may also adversely affect blood pressure and triglycerides, reduce endothelial relaxation, and cause left ventricular hypertrophy, all potentially increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction. Compared to synthetic oral anabolic steroids, Boldenone has a lesser impact on cardiovascular risk factors. This is possibly partly due to its open nature to liver metabolism, allowing it to have less impact on hepatic management of cholesterol. Aromatization of boldenone to estradiol also helps to mitigate the negative effects of androgens on serum lipids.

To help reduce cardiovascular strain, it is advised to maintain an active cardiovascular exercise program and always minimize the intake of saturated fats, cholesterol, and simple carbohydrates during AAS use. It is also recommended to supplement with fish oil (4 grams per day) and natural cholesterol/antioxidant formulas like Lipid Stabil or a product with similar ingredients.

Side Effects (Testosterone Suppression):

All anabolic/androgenic steroids, when taken in doses sufficient to promote muscle gain, are expected to suppress endogenous testosterone production. Without stimulants of testosterone, levels should return to normal within 1-4 months post-drug cessation. Note that prolonged hypogonadotropic hypogonadism can develop secondary to steroid abuse and requires medical intervention.

Usage (Men):

Despite its ability to remain active for a prolonged period, boldenone is usually injected at least weekly for physique- or performance-enhancing purposes. The most common dosage is 200-400 mg per week (4-8 ml, 50 mg version). If necessary, dosage schedules can be further split to reduce the volume of each injection, such as administering the drug 2-3 times per week. It is also important to rotate injection sites regularly to avoid irritation or infection.

Although not a rapid mass builder, boldenone can provide a slow but steady gain of strength and quality muscle mass. The positive effects of the drug become most evident when used for longer cycles, lasting at least 8 weeks or longer. The muscle gained should not be the smooth bulk seen with androgens, but instead a very defined and solid look. Since there is little to no water retention contributing to the diameter of the muscle, any size gained during a cycle of boldenone can be retained after the drug has been discontinued.

Boldenone is a very versatile drug and can be combined with a number of other drugs depending on the desired result. For mass, it is typically stacked with injectable testosterone like enanthate or cypionate. This can produce significant gains in muscle size and strength without the same intensity of side effects as using testosterone alone (often at higher doses). During cutting phases, when combined with non-aromatizing steroids like trenbolone acetate or methenolone enanthate, it can greatly improve muscle hardness and density. Oral c-17α-alkylated agents like fluoxymesterone or stanozolol can also be used but would present some level of hepatotoxicity. For some, the estrogen buildup from boldenone is enough to justify its use during mass gaining cycles.

Usage (Women):

When used for physique- or performance-enhancing purposes, the dosage for women is significantly lower than for men, typically around 50-75 mg per week. Women should use caution with this slow-acting form of steroid, as it can be difficult to control blood levels and slow to diminish if adverse symptoms arise.
