Oxandrolone is an orally administered synthetic anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone. It possesses strong anabolic and androgenic activity without significant estrogenic or progestational effects.

Oxandrolone is known to be relatively mild among oral steroids, capable of increasing the strength and quality of muscle tissue without significant side effects. Experiments have shown that its anabolic activity per milligram is six times higher than that of testosterone, while its androgenicity is considerably lower.

This medication is favored among athletes in speed/strength sports and competitive athletes who are dieting, as it tends to produce pure tissue gains (without the storage of fat or water), aligning with their desired outcomes.

Product History:

Oxandrolone was first introduced in 1962. A few years later, it was developed into a medication by the pharmaceutical giant G.D. Searle & Co. (now part of Pfizer) and sold under the trade name Anavar in the USA and the Netherlands. Searle also marketed the drug under various other trade names, including Lonavar (Argentina, Australia), Lipidex (Brazil), Antitriol (Spain), Anatrophill (France), and Protivar.

Oxandrolone was considered a very mild oral synthetic metabolite, safe enough for use by women and children. In this regard, Searle appeared successful, as Oxandrolone demonstrated a high success rate and high tolerance among men, women, and children. Initially, Oxandrolone was also used to treat certain conditions, including promoting lean tissue growth during catabolic illness, post-surgical trauma, infections, or prolonged corticosteroid exposure, and increasing bone density in osteoporosis patients.

By the 1980s, the FDA slightly expanded the scope of Oxandrolone’s uses, including promoting weight gain after surgery, treating unexplained weight loss, and infections and trauma. Despite its ongoing safe therapeutic record, Searle decided to voluntarily discontinue Oxandrolone on July 1, 1989. Decreasing sales and growing public concern about the athletic use of synthetic anabolic steroids seemed to be the root of this decision. With the Anavar brand off the market,

Oxandrolone disappeared completely from the U.S. pharmacies. Soon after, international Oxandrolone products (often sold or licensed by Searle) also began to be discontinued as leading global drug manufacturers steadily withdrew from the synthetic anabolic steroid business. By the early 1990s, Oxandrolone seemed to be moving away from its commercial path.

Six years later, Oxandrolone returned to the U.S. market. The product reappeared on pharmacy shelves in December 1995, this time developed by Bio-Technology General Corp. (BTG). BTG continued to market it for FDA-approved mental health-related uses but was also granted the right to treat symptoms in AIDS, alcoholic hepatitis, Turner syndrome (a condition of congenital ovarian hypoplasia in women), and delayed puberty in boys. The unique drug status allowed BTG to maintain a monopoly on these new usage drugs for seven years, enabling them to keep prices very high. Many patients were outraged, as the drug cost between $3.75 and $30 per day—a price that was significantly higher than Anavar several years earlier. A few years later, the release of 10 mg tablets by BTG did little to reduce the relative cost of the medication.

Oxandrolone is still sold in the U.S. market, currently under the Savient brand name (formerly known as BTG). It is now FDA approved "for promoting weight gain after surgery and for providing protein

supplementation to those suffering from chronic infections or severe trauma who cannot gain or maintain normal weight due to an undefined pathophysiology, as well as typically used for osteoporosis patients to alleviate bone pain." A generic version of the drug is now available in the U.S., lowering the price of Oxandrolone. Outside the U.S., Oxandrolone is still in circulation, though not as widely.

Circulation Specifications:

Oxandrolone is available in specific human pharmaceutical markets. Ingredients and dosages may vary by country and manufacturer. The original Anavar brand contained 2.5 mg of steroid per tablet. Oxandrolone tablets contain 2.5 mg or 10 mg. Other brands now typically contain 2.5 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg of steroid per tablet.

Structural Features:

Oxandrolone is a modified form of dihydrotestosterone. Its differences include: 1) oral administration capability, 2) the addition of a methyl group at carbon 17-α to maintain hormone levels, and 3) replacing a carbon atom in ring A with an oxygen atom. Oxandrolone is the only commercially available steroid with such a substituted basic ring structure, significantly increasing the steroid's anabolic potency.
